The National Youth Choir of Australia was founded in 1995, with the aim of bringing together Australia’s best young adult singers in a truly national choir, to perform choral music of an exceptional standard.
The first season of the National Youth Choir of Australia was held in Perth, Western Australia under the direction of Weston Noble. The choir has met once every year since and has included seasons in Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart and Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin as well as tours in urban and regional Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, the Northern Territory, Western Australia and New Zealand.
NYCA has performed under some of Australia’s finest choral conductors, as well as visiting conductors from the USA and Canada. After the choir’s brief hiatus in 2001, Graeme Morton was appointed as artistic director, and the choir re-formed in 2002.
In 2008, Carl Crossin was appointed as the choir’s new artistic director, and 2009 saw new choristers join with NYCA alumni in a combined season in Melbourne. 2010 was a fantastic NYCA season under Mike Brewer, musical director of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain.
